Thomas R. Shaughnessey, Jr., age 77, of Fairfield, died suddenly while crusing in the Carribean on Monday, April 5, 2004. Born in Norwalk, he was a life long Southport and Fairfield resident. He attended the Pequot School and was a graduate of Roger Ludlowe High School Class of 1944 and the McAllister School of Embalming in 1948. Early in his career, Thomas worked as an Eastern Regional Sales Manager for Hotel and Industrial Accounts for Seagram Distillers in New York City. Thomas was one of the original co-founders, along with his brother Jack E. Shaughnessey, of Shaughnessey Brothers Funeral Home, which they opened in 1951 and held the title of President for 53 years. Thomas was a 53 year member of the Southport Volunteer Fire Department, the Patterson Club, the Knights of Columbus - 3rd and 4th degrees, a charter member of the Gaelic American Club, the Elks Lodge #2200, was a Past Commander of the United States Power Squadron, a member of the AARP #1861 Greenfield Hill Chapter, where he was a two term President. He was also a member of the Scandinavian Club, the Fidelity St. John Lodge #3 - AF-AM, the Scottish Rite Masonry - Lafayette Consistory S.P.A.S., the Oldtimers Athlietic Association, the Ukranian American Club in Southport, the Fayerweather Yacht Club, the Connecticut Funeral Driector's Association, the International Order of the Funeral Rule (OGR), Independent National Selected Morticians (NSM) and was a past member of the Fairfield Rotary Club. He was a lifelong member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church where he was a lector, Eucharistic Minister, Chairman of Parish picnics and a member o the St. Thomas Bowling League. He enjoyed boating aboard his boat, the "Irish Wake", golfing and playing card with friends. He will be remembered by all who knew him as the smiling face behind the desk with a joke for all. He is survived by his devoted daughters: Sheryl A. Shaughnessey and Pamala M. Shaughnessey-Banks and her husband, Samuel, both of Fairfield. His loving companion, Catherine Fingelly of Southport and her wonderful family, many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his only brother, John (Jack) E. Shaughnessey.
